Flat Roof Systems
Below are some general facts and data about the EPDM membrane which we talked about earlier.
EPDM (the acronym for ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a roofing membrane that has been in use for about 40 years. EPDM as a roofing system is a popular one for domestic and commercial roofing applications.
1. In recent years, recycling of EPDM has begun in earnest. More than 1 billion square feet of EPDM roofing material is installed annually and recycling now keeps much of that material out of the landfills.
2. EPDM roofing systems are dependable and an economical choice for commercial and domestic roofing applications. It also is durable and efficient.
3. The economic benefits of EPDM roofing includes its low installation costs, low long-term maintenance costs and most code approvals come with relative ease. Some EPDM applications are both Energy Star and California Title 24 compliant.
EPDM roofing systems are installed in one of three ways. Fully adhered systems use solvent-based adhesives. Mechanically fastened systems are attached in accordance with manufacturer-approved fasteners. Loose-laid membranes are secured only at the perimeter of the roof and covered with rocks or pavers.
